Basic Sailing Class - Mate A

Basic Sailing Classes Consist Of:

  • US Sailing “Learn to Sail Textbook”
  • Two evenings of classroom instruction with US Sailing Certified Instructor
  • One all day practical on the water lesson utilizing the ”American 146 Day Sailor” and written exam

Classroom Instructions Include:

  • Elements of Boating Safety
  • Parts of the Boat
  • Knot Tying
  • Sails and Sailing Theory

Practical Instructions Include:

  • Sailing All Points of Sail
  • Leaving/Returning to Dock
  • Man Overboard & Capsize Recovery

After successful completion, participants will be issued a US Sailing Certification Record Book

Certification Benefits:

  • Access to rent Basic Sailing Qualified Sailboats at various Navy MWR programs around the world (*local policies and procedures may vary)
  • Access to rent the American 146 Day Sailor and “Aquacat” boats here at MWR Great Lakes
  • Nationally Recognized Skill Certification through US Navy Sailing Association and access to membership. (*This class does not provide a "US Sailing Certification". Certification is for "US Navy Sailing Association" only). 

2026 Classes Schedule:

  • Class Option 1: June 25, 6-9pm | June 26, 6-9pm | June 28, 9am-3pm | June 30, 3-6pm 
  • Class Option 2: July 1, 9am-3pm | July 2, 9am-3pm | July 3, 9am-Noon
  • Class Option 3: Aug. 13, 6-9pm | Aug. 14, 6-9pm | Aug. 15, 9am-3pm | Aug. 16, 9am-Noon
